New museum exhibition exploring Wessex’s folk culture opens TODAY

Un/Common People: Folk Culture in Wessex opens at The Salisbury Museum today (Saturday, February 7), and will run until Sunday, May 10.

Celebrating the folk art, seasonal customs, and everyday creativity of the region, the exhibition features more than 100 objects from Wessex Museums, the Museum of British Folklore and private lenders.

Items on display include a sweetheart pincushion from Wiltshire, crafted by a First World War veteran, and a rare ship crafted entirely from straw, reflecting Poole’s maritime heritage.

Visitors can also see a portrait by a Nigerian artist created while seeking asylum in Swindon.

The exhibition is supported by newly commissioned films, photography, and a Folk Song and Story Map.

Un/Common People is supported by Wessex Museums, Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Museum of British Folklore.
