Salisbury Women’s Refuge saved from closure after huge £20k fundraising effort

The refuge, which provides secure accommodation for up to 12 women or families at a time, issued an urgent plea in December for donations from the public, local organisations, and funders to ensure its future.

They were at serious risk of closure due to a lack of funding, and they set up a fundraising page with a target of £20,000.

People from the local community came together to support the crucial charity, with some anonymous donors giving up to £1,500, and altogether they managed to raise £20,265.

Caroline Probert, chair of trustees for Salisbury Women’s Refuge, said: “I would like to start by saying an enormous thank you to everyone who has contributed to our recent fundraising campaign. We reached and exceeded our target of £20,000 in less than a month.

“It feels very good to know that there is such goodwill and support in the community towards the refuge. Reaching this target means that we can focus on the work the refuge does for the next few months and make long-term plans for the future of the refuge.

“All the staff of the refuge have been involved in this fundraiser, contributing ideas and photos, designing the webpage, and updating our social media, as well as replying to many messages from the public. Volunteers have also played a large part behind the scenes.

“Everyone is delighted at the outcome and ready to start the new year refreshed and re-enthused.

“Our residents know that their place in our refuge is secure for the next few months, and that stability is very helpful when trying to build a new independent life.”

Dating back 150 years, the refuge began as an orphanage and has since provided safety and life-changing support for women and children fleeing abusive situations.

It operates nationwide, assisting families across the UK and maintaining approximately 90 per cent occupancy in recent years.

A small dedicated team of eight staff members, supported by volunteers, delivers comprehensive specialist support.

This includes one-to-one guidance, the Freedom Programme, counselling, play therapy, housing assistance, and readiness for independent living.

In light of the life-altering impact made over the decades, Salisbury Women’s Refuge pledges to continue providing a safe haven for women who need it.
