Major outdoor clothing brand set to close store in Salisbury city centre

Outdoor retailer Blacks has announced it is closing its Salisbury store on New Canal after big closing-down sale signs appeared in the windows.

The store stocks outdoor clothing and equipment from brands including Berghaus, Columbia and The North Face.

No closing date has been confirmed just yet, but the announcement comes after a string of closures affecting the brand nationwide throughout 2026.

As of May 2026, only 22 Blacks Outdoors stores remained open nationally, with the majority of locations having been converted to sister brand Go Outdoors under the same parent company, JD Sports Fashion. Now that number is going down again.

The brand was acquired by JD Sports in 2012 for £20 million following a period of financial difficulty.

JD Sports has simultaneously invested in five “pinnacle” Blacks stores in Aintree, Brighton, Glasgow, Harrogate and Meadowhall, relaunching them in April 2026 as part of a repositioning of the brand as a premium outdoor destination.

The store on New Canal in Salisbury is part of a large number of businesses on the street that have closed in the last two years, with lots of buildings currently left empty.
